2015 COACHING STAFF

Kyle Abramowski

Assistant Coach (Green Team)

Kyle grew up with a passion for hockey. Starting at a young age he quickly developed a love for the game. Kyle continued to play competitive hockey for Sherwood park. On top of years of playing experience Kyle has been coaching hockey now for 5 years. He brings excitement, passion and experience to the Northstars and is committed to supporting young athletes on and off the ice. Outside of hockey Kyle enjoys golf and sitting on a beach!

Matt Weir

Assistant Coach (Green Team)

Matt's first love was hockey and played competitively throughout the system in Nova Scotia. He went on to play hockey in college at NSCC Akerley Campus were he studied power engineering. After college, he moved to Alberta to pursue his career, where he started his family and got involved in coaching with his kids. Matt continues to play men's league.

Brendan Curley

Head Coach (Green Team)

Brendan played hockey growing up, and unfortunately due to an injury was exited from the sport early at age 12. He began swimming as a result, where he competed at a high level, medaling at Jr. Nationals, competing at Canada Summer Games, and CIS Championships. Brendan combines the discipline he learned swimming and learning mindset with hockey to deliver a unique hockey experience. Brendan also uses his work leadership experience to help develop players. Brendan has head coached U9 hockey for the last three years. Last year, Brendan was the head coach of the Tier 1 U9 Rangers, where he was named Coach of the year by the Fort Saskatchewan Minor Hockey Association. His ability to see improvement opportunities and work on developing each individual player was a big part of this recognition.

Scott Kurie

Co-Coach (White Team)

Scott grew up in Sherwood Park, playing out his minor hockey eligibility with the Midget AAA Kings.  From there, Scott attended the University of Alberta, while playing for the Sherwood Park Jr B Knights.

Scott has two boys, Harris (2012) and Cohen (2015) and has coached on most of their hockey teams (Sherwood Park minor hockey and HSL).

Kyle Freadrich

Co-Coach (White Team)

Kyle was born and raised in Killam Alberta, where he played all of his minor hockey. As a 15 year old he was lucky enough to be listed by the Spokane Chiefs and be selected to represent the provincial zone 7 team that would go on to win the Alberta cup tournament in Calgary. Kyle then returned to Killam to play minor hockey until the fall of 1996 when he attended the Prince George Cougars camp and cracked their lineup. Kyle was soon traded to the Regina Pats for a bag of pucks. In 1997 he was selected early in the 3rd round of the NHL entry draft by the Vancouver Canucks and later would sign as a free agent with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Kyle played over 100 professional games in his career and was lucky enough to play a handful in the NHL before being forced to retire from post concussion syndrome in 2001.

Along the way Kyle was fortunate enough to play for a 2 time Jack Adams winner, with a first ballot hall of fame inductee and many Stanley cup champions. But it was the guys in the minors and fourth liners that he learned the most from and hopes to ingrain in his coaching style and messaging.

Kyle has coached from Junior B to 7 year olds and enjoys studying the game and its progression. His goal is to help kids understand the game on and off the ice. He wants the young players he coaches to develop a passion and love for the game of hockey and help them fulfill their dreams of having a career in hockey.
